North-Eastern Region Urban Development Programme

The North-Eastern Region Urban Development Programme scheme is launched by the MINISTRY OF DEVELOPMENT OF NORTHEASTERN REGION, the aim is to improve the quality of life of urban residents and enhance urban productivity through improved infrastructure and services, building capacity for enhanced urban governance, finance, and service delivery systems through institutional and financial reforms. 

 

The Northeastern Region (NER) of India is one of the less developed regions in India. To achieve the goal of developing challenges in the urban sector, the Government of India (GoI) with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) assist and make efforts to encourage development in the NER which includes the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura. In the consequences of the scheme, an urban sector road map has been prepared for infrastructure investment requirements in priority urban services.

Such as 

(i) Water Supply, 

(ii) Sewerage and Sanitation, 

(iii) Solid Waste Management in these states. 

 

In addition, Project Management and Capacity Development of the ULBs through institutional and financial reforms is another component of the proposed project so that the ULBs become capable of planning and implementing infrastructure projects. The project called Northeastern Region Urban Development Programme (NERUDP) was implemented in two phases. 

 

Phase – I covers the capital cities of 5 North Eastern States.  I)Agartala (Tripura), ii) Aizawl (Mizoram), iii) Gangtok (Sikkim), iv) Kohima (Nagaland), v) Shillong (Meghalaya). 

The states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Manipur would be covered in Phase – II. 

 

Assistance  

Financial aid of Rs.1371.4 crore (GoI) government of India and Asian Development Bank together share in the proportion of 30/70 to five states to be used for the described project 90% grant and 10% loan in three phases. 

 

Who can apply? 

Governments of these five states of the northeastern region. 

Tripura 

Mizoram  

Sikkim 

Nagaland 

Meghalaya 

 

How to apply? 

The State Government writes directly to the Department of Urban Development, Union Ministry of Urban Development for approval and sanction of their project proposal.
