There are good reasons for both, the Gordon model determines the required rate of return based on the current market price, relative to the dividend payout, and the expected growth rate of those dividends. The CAPM provides us with a required rate of return by comparing the volatility of the company’s stock price to the volatility of the market. This is a good measure as it includes the opportunity cost of the greater market and attempts to factor in the price of risk.
